Welcome to 'Transmitting to Earth'. I'm Charssun and I'll be your host. This blog and podcast is a byproduct of VoyagerRadio.com and is intended to provide the most timely information about this Internet radio station. It is also intended to be a fun and accessible electronic journal with commentary focusing on Internet radio, podcasting and webcasting issues and technologies, music, and some of my other interests. I also offer personal perspective about being an Internet radio broadcaster (and podcaster).

Third Coast Festival Broadcast Airs Tonight

Tonight from 8 p.m. to 10 pm. Pacific Time local public radio station KPCC will be airing the 2003 Third Coast Festival Broadcast, the culmination of the Third Coast International Audio Festival. The Third Coast Festival is "a celebration of the best feature and documentary work heard worldwide on the radio and the Internet", and includes a competition which "celebrates creative, compelling and revealing documentary work that offers new insights and perspectives to listeners". A top honor of the event is the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Festival Broadcast will included a wonderfully entertaining acceptance speech by this year's winner, Joe Frank.

Should you miss this broadcast, or find yourself living somewhere other than Los Angeles, please check the list of stations carrying the Third Coast Festival Broadcast to see when the event will be airing in your neck of the woods. And if you've already missed this broadcast, you'll still be able to listen to Joe Frank's acceptance speech at his website, JoeFrank.com. (You can also listen to some of Joe Frank's shows, too.)

Enjoy the broadcast, folks--if you love radio, this is where you'll want your ears to be tuned in to tonight.

VoyagerRadio Testing Broadband Webcast

Great news! I'm currently testing a broadband version of VoyagerRadio! The new audio stream will be officially released within the next few weeks. The current dialup version of VoyagerRadio will still be available, so if you're listening via a 56k modem, nothing will change--dialup listeners will still be listening to the same audio stream. A new stream will be available for broadband listeners.

I believe this is the best news I've had to report since the advent of this Internet radio station. I've always wanted to introduce a broadband version of VoyagerRadio, and now I finally have the opportunity to do so. Thank you to everyone who answered my poll over the past two months--your feedback has encouraged me to introduce a broadband version of VoyagerRadio. Now please consider subscribing to the VoyagerRadio Newsletter to receive an official notification of broadband VoyagerRadio's release. The newsletter is free and your privacy will be respected.

Pepe Deluxé

Pepe Deluxé will be disrupting the peace at the Chop Suey tonight, so get your ears cleaned and put on your flight jackets or parachute pants or corduroys or flannels or funkedelica suits or techno gear--or all of the above, it doesn't matter--because the mixed sounds of Pepe are suitable for everyone, and simply must be heard. So get your party shows on and make it happen tonight!

Could CDs Be History Soon?

Ananova asserts that compact discs could be history in five years, being replaced by a paper-thin device about the size of your fingertip which could hold a gigabyte of data. Yes, but would it make a good clock? Doubtful--but Stuart Little may find it useful.

Voyager Exits Solar System and Encounters New Species, Pepe Deluxé

In recent weeks the Voyager 1 became a hotly debated topic as scientists began arguing over whether or not the spacecraft has left our solar system. Voyager has certainly traveled farther than any other object humankind has sent into space, and once it is proved that the spacecraft has crossed the boundaries of our solar system, it will go down in history as the first to do so.

Voyager has also encountered a new species, an amalgamation of sounds which calls itself Pepe Deluxé. There is some speculation as to what caused this cosmic sonic disturbance, and whether it may have been the result of a recent space storm. Whatever its origin, it is clear that Pepe Deluxé has been exposed to a wide variety of music and is intent on rocking our world in an entirely new way. Though not always downtempo, Pepe Deluxé has certainly become a fixture in my ears since I first heard its music, so VoyagerRadio is now transmitting several tracks from its two official releases, Super Sound and the more recent BEATitude. If you're in Los Angeles tonight, be sure to catch Pepe Deluxé live at the Transistor Lounge. Tomorrow night it'll be in Portland, Oregon and Friday it'll deejay in Seattle, Washington. Check Pepe Deluxé's schedule at its webspace on the Emperor Norton Records website to see when it'll be arriving in your town. And if you're in Canada, don't think you're off the hook--Pepe will be causing a disturbance at Fez Batik on November 21st.

If you absolutely can't make the Pepe Deluxé show tonight, be sure to tune in to VoyagerRadio to hear some of its wonderfully eclectic music in mp3PRO quality--but don't blame me when you regret having missed the show!

The Curtain Opens, and...

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that I now introduce you to Pepe Deluxé, currently on tour in North America. If you're in Los Angeles on Wednesday, head over to the Transistor Lounge to catch the Finland act in all its musical glory. My headphones have been singing with Pepe's eclectic sounds this past week, and I've flooded VoyagerRadio with his rhythms for your listening pleasure. But if you're getting impatient waiting for the next Pepe song in the playlist, take a stroll to Pepe Deluxé's space on Emperor Norton's website to listen to some tracks from the latest CD, BEATitude. Your ears will thank you.
